UFC 90 Predictions

October 25, 2008 by admin

Despite some late changes to the card and a less than competitive main event, UFC 90 should still make for a decent MMA event. There are some interesting lightweight bouts, a welterweight number one contender match up, and of course the middleweight belt is on the line. While there is potential for some upsets or at least a couple great back-and-forth fights, UFC 90 looks pretty easy to call.

Anderson Silva vs. Patrick Côté

Silva has yet to lose in the UFC and has only really been challenged once or twice in the Octagon. He is an absolute nightmare standing and he has proven himself more than apt on the ground. He has nary a chink in his armour and looking at the current UFC middleweight roster there doesn’t appear to be anyone who can stop him. Especially not Patrick Côté.

While Côté has put together a great string of wins and finally displayed his talents in the Octagon after an 0-4 start, he is still not an awe-inspiring fighter. He has heavy hands, a good chin and an aggressive fighting style but his ground game is lacking and he isn’t particularly brilliant in any area. Sure he’s beat everyone in Canada not named Georges but a middleweight belt holder? It’s not going to happen.

This will be a short fight. Côté will probably attempt to overwhelm Silva with some heavy haymakers early and somehow close the distance enough to not allow Anderson to get off any of his laser strikes, while at the same time not get close enough to be caught in his lethal Thai clinches. It won’t work and Silva will catch him with a knee or two and quickly decimate the French-Canadian.

Unless Côté lands a Matt Serra-like bomb early on and absolutely destroys the lives of every Vegas oddsmaker working,  there is no way this fight will be competitive.

Prediction: Silva by manslaughter in the 1st round.
